The peri-urban area north of Mar del Plata: urban and environmental problems from the perspective of its inhabitants

Abstract

The peri-urban areas of the city of Mar del Plata exhibit urban and environmental issues that are generally derived from growth processes with little planning. Although many problems are common, perceptions show differences associated with the particular characteristics of each territory. Based on previous studies and assuming an interdisciplinary approach, this study analyzes the urban and environmental problems of the peri-urban area located north of the La Tapera stream from the perspective of the inhabitants. To do this, using a collective mapping carried out in the area as a basis, a survey was developed that investigates the state and concern regarding the following topics: public services and infrastructure; mobility and transportation; housing conditions; green spaces; social, cultural, and productive equipment; environment; security and violence. The lowest score regarding the state corresponds to green spaces, while the greatest concern is reflected in environmental aspects. However, the results obtained show differential perceptions in the neighborhoods that make up the area. For example, the score relative to the state of the set of topics reveals more critical conditions in Las Dalias, and the concern for mobility and transportation is more evident in Félix U. Camet and Parque Peña, for the environment in Las Dalias, for security in Parque Camet, and for housing conditions in Alto Camet. We hope that the preliminary analysis arising from this study will provide the basis for generating interventions that respond to the problems perceived by the community itself.
